A garage doesn't have to be a man cave to have an attractive floor finish. A new epoxy finish on a rough cement floor will upgrade an otherwise ordinary garage while at the same time providing a durable long lasting surface. The most time-consuming phase of this job won't have anything to do with drying time; it will be the process of removing everything in the garage - no small feat for most of us. But the payoff is worth it because you'll get rid of a lot of unwanted stuff, find things you've been looking for and enjoy an easy-to-maintain surface for years to come.

Depending on the condition of the floor, you may need to do extensive preparation work before applying the finish. For example, if the surface is in less than perfect, you will have to repair any loose or chipped concrete, remove any poorly bonded paint or sealers, and eliminate excessive moisture.

To apply an epoxy finish to a one-car cement garage floor that's clean, dry, free of any grease or oil spots, and in good condition, a painting contractor will charge $435 which includes the labor and the material. You can buy the materials for $150, apply the finish, and save 65 cent. The materials include a two-part water-based garage floor coating such as Epoxy Shield by Rustoleum, a paint roller with 1/2-inch nap roller, a screw-in extension handle and wide masking tape to protect the base of the walls. When you’re choosing a paint roller, look at its edges. Beveled edges are the best choice to prevent the tracks or outline of the roller in the paint on the surface. Keep in mind that the cheaper the roller, the more likely it is to shed its fibers which also will be left on the surface in the paint. The bottom line is: you get what you pay for with painting gear so buy the best you can afford.
