Do It Yourself:
Replace a Door Threshold

Replace an old door threshold with a new one and help prevent heated or cool air from escaping. Read the step-by-step directions to learn how to do it yourself.

Materials

Aluminum threshold with hardware
Cardboard
Caulk

Tools

Hammer
Screwdriver
Hack saw
Pry bar
Chisel
Electric drill

Before You Begin
Before you remove the old worn threshold, check to see how thick it is. Also check the clearance between the bottom of the door and the floor. If the old threshold is wood without weatherstripping you may have to trim the bottom of the door to fit over the new threshold.

If the threshold is aluminum with weatherstripping you may be able to simply buy a replacement rubber gasket, instead of replacing the entire threshold.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Remove the old threshold
Use a hack saw to cut the threshold in half. To prevent damage place thin cardboard next to the threshold over the floor under where you will be sawing. Put the claws of a hammer or pry bar under the threshold and pry it up and remove the two halves.

Step 2: Prepare the floor
Clean the area under the threshold, using the chisel to remove any rough spots in the floor or door jamb. Then measure the width of the threshold and cut the new threshold to fit. You may have to cut the door stop to fit over the threshold, or cut the threshold to fit around the door stop.

Step 3: Install the new threshold
Apply caulk to the area underneath the threshold. Place the threshold in the doorway and then secure it in place with the screws provided by the manufacturer. Install the rubber threshold in the aluminum body and check there is clearance between the door and threshold.
