How To: Step by Step
Step 1: Assemble the weathervane
If the vane requires assembly, put it together following the directions provided by the manufacturer. Assembly is straightforward and usually consists of sliding the decorative elements onto the shaft and then placing the weathervane on the shaft.
Step 2: Install the mount on a roof peak or side wall of house
There are several different types of roof mounts available. The more traditional design mounts on the roof. Other styles are fastened to the eaves or side wall with screws.
Read the installation instructions that came with the mount. Then using the mount as a template, position it on the roof or eave and drill mounting holes for the screws. Fasten the mount with the screws. If you are using the roof mount, place a dab of roofing cement on the screws to prevent a leak.
Place the mounting rod that came with the weathervane in the mount and mark it about 16 inches above the roof or to the length specified in the mounting instructions. Then use a hacksaw to trim the post. Slide the post into the mount and secure it with screws. Apply caulk where the post enters the mount.
