Utility knife
How To: Step by Step
Step 1: Measure and buy materials
Screening material is sold in pre-packed dimensions and cut to size from bolts of various widths. To buy the correct amount of screening material, measure the length and width of the screen and add a few extra inches to both dimensions. Also buy screen spline and a splining tool. The spline is a thin cord of rubber or neoprene that you press into the groove around the screen. Add the dimensions of the four sides of the screen together, plus a few extra inches to find the length of spline needed. You use the tool to press the spline into the narrow groove and secure it there.
Step 2: Prepare the screen
Remove the screen door and lay it on a flat level work surface like a large work table or work horses. Then use a bladed screwdriver to pull out the old screen spline from around the frame. Remove the screening fabric and clean the groove around the frame.
Step 3: Measure and cut screening
Cut new screening fabric to fit the frame making it about two inches wider and longer on all sides than the frame. Center it over the frame so it covers the groove and overlaps evenly on all four sides.
Step 4: Measure and cut screen spline
Unroll the screen spline and lay it around the frame to see that it fits. There should be a few extra inches that you'll cut off. You can also use the old spline as a guide for how much you'll need.
