How to: Install a Storm Door

Replace an old storm door with a new combination storm door and transform your front entry while saving energy dollars. Follow this DIY information with how to step-by-step instructions to get a professional looking installation.

Before You Begin

If there is an old storm door installed remove it by unfastening the frame from the wooden door jamb. Use wood filler to repair any holes or damage to the jamb and sand it smooth. Before installing the new door paint the door jamb.

Measure the height and width of the door opening and choose a pre-framed, also called pre-hung door module that you fasten onto the existing door jambs and door casings. Most can be hinged on either the right or left side. Looking at the door from the outside, decide which side you want the hinge on.

If the door opening is too wide fasten a thin strip of wood to the inside of the door jamb with finishing nails. Read and follow the manufacturer's directions and carefully study the parts to identify them. Below are general directions to give you an overview of what's involved installing a pre-framed storm door.

Remove the glass and screen sash so the door weighs less and is lighter to handle.

How To: Step by Step

Step  1:   Fasten the rain cap

Screw on the rain cap to the top of the door opening that diverts rain away from the opening.





Step  2:   Cut and install the hinge

Lay the door on saw horses and note the top and bottom and measure the length of the hinge and mounting flange attached to the door. Then cut off any excess hinge with a hack saw. Place the door in the jamb and attach the hinge with the screws provided.
